Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum....self employed handyman/satellite installer (Tv engineer in another life) living on Costa Blanca for 7 years. The lady I'm working for just had a new central heating system fitted by an English Plumber - he's scarpered back to the UK with a lot of her money!! She has no hot water...it's barely lukewarm. There is a green knob on the boiler to adjust the temperature of the hot water but this doesn't do anything, in fact it doesn't feel as though it's connected to anything as it moves so freely....certainly not any kind of tap and it doesn't even feel like a pot?? I know I'm not a plumber but if there is something easy that this guy has missed?? The only manual we have is in Spanish but even so it's not very explcit, think it may just be Vaillent 'blurb'.

I dont recognise the boiler model so I dont know the details. The type number is similar to a 12 y.o. model here though.

It sounds as if the knob shaft may well be snapped. If you are good with delicate electronics you may be able to open it and check this and move the pot itself if the shaft is indeed snapped.

Otherwise email UK Vaillant and ask them to get you the MI for the boiler in English.

However, unless you become very experienced with boilers and heating you may be better off getting a local Brit who is familiar with boilers to fix it if the knob does not solve it.

Hi Tony...thanks for the quick reply. The boiler is literally two weeks old. He fitted the central heating and new boiler while I was fitting a new kitchen......as it's Spain, the whole lot works off gas bottles. She originally had an instant hot water boiler - off the same gas bottles -and got as much very hot water as she needs. Since he's fitted this system the water gets lukewarm at best. As the boiler is brand new, do you thinkl he's either damaged it, or not connected something that he should have?? Not so easy to get decent plumbers around here...most of them ride horses (if you get my meaning!!)

I'm an electronics engineer but actually fitted my own Vaillent boiler back in the UK about 10 years ago (yes, I know I shouldn't!) so I'm not stupid. If I take the front off the thing, do you thinks I would spot the problem easily??

Feel sorry for this woman, she has her daughter and two grandchildren and no hot water!! ( and no man either!!!)

Checking the knob spindle should be very simple for you. Antistatic etc!

I have come across these second generation single mums too! They are wonderful for casual men in the UK as they dont/never work and live off the state and spend all their time going out all tarted up. I would not trust them anywhere near my wallet though!

I would advise you NOT to feel in any way sorry for them though. They choose to live that way and its very antisocial. Make sure you are paid up to date before you start any new work! They have no sympathy for anyone and are just out to get what they can for nothing!

Thanks Tony I'll check it out tomorrow...........

Re the family...they're quite the opposite, too much money and no common sense. They paid this 'plumber' 9500 euros for 6 days of bad work. He cut through all the floor tiles to lay the pipes and just left it....it's now my job to try and match the tiles and make good....and try and get the hot water to work

She's just been quoted 3500 euros (another Englishman) for a new soakaway that she doesn't need ...it just the pipe blocked...again I'm doing that!

Over here in Spain there are no state handouts...if you don't work, you don't get paid...simple as that.

I'll post if I manage to sort it!!...thanks again

It seems that I am working in the wrong country!

Viva in Espania!
