Hello all,

Have posted a couple of times regarding stuff I have done in my house and the mothers and I am also a saddo that reads most posts on here as I find plumbing really interesting!

Anyway after help on here I changed a radiator valve on my mums microbore/combi boiler system after draining down - simples. (changed the valve on my conventional? boiler by bunging and just reading posts)

She has now spoken to a friend of a friend who is elderly and can't afford to have a leaky valve replaced (quoted £70). Out of the kindness of my heart and my growing confidence (probably my downfall!!) I went to have a look and would do it for nothing.

Again microbore which terrifies me but the trv has been leaking from the bottom nut for some time and am worried I won't be able to get that off. Secondly its a dormer bungalow thing and after crawling into the loft I am greeted with a large tank that has the red shut off valve on the pipe out (I presume this is the cold water storage tank for the cylinder) and a very small tank on a shelf above this. Is this the F + E tank that I would bung as it does seem very small (although only has I think 5 radiators in the bungalow) just worried that its not and as there is no drain off valve that I can see I need to be sure.

Lastly (sorry) i went to the merchants to ask for a 10mm trv and they said that they don't do them anymore only a 15mm with an adapter? If this is the case are they easy to use or do I need to cut pipework - in other words left to the professional.

Sorry for the long drawn out post but don't want to balls it up and made what I know in my mind with time taken is a simple job!

If its leaking from the bottom (compression) nut, try tightening it a bit first.

Try a bit at a time. Don't put too much force on it, only enough to stop leak.

right been and tried this nut wouldn't even budge to tighten. So my big long list of questions still stand  but now another one.

If its leaking from there is it because of the olive? As I've said I'm not cutting pipe so if I can't use the old one I ain't doing it. Years ago when I wasn't quite so brave a plumber wrapped ptfe around the olive would that make a difference?
