Vapour barrier on ground?

Hi all,

I’m planning to insulate a suspended timber floor, and considering putting a polythene sheet as a vapour barrier on the ground/soil under the floor, ie in the very bottom of the void.

We have quite high water table in our area, and so the soil can get quite damp/musty under the floors, and thought this would be a decent way to reduce moisture coming up from the soil into the airspace under the floor - from a google it seems quite common in New Zealand, but can’t find much about it being routinely done here!

I plan to have a proper breathable membrane between the insulation and flooring too, but this wouldn’t stop the void beneath getting moist from the ground up.

Any thoughts on whether there would be any downsides / unintended consequences of this? Other than ensuring water can’t run in and pool on top of the polythene I can’t think it would cause too many issues??
