Varnishing An Oak Handrail

Hi all,

I've recently fitted a white oak handrail and decided to use clear varnish on it to protect it.

I've followed the instructions for the first coat and I'm happy with the result, it says to apply 2 or 3 coats and too gently sand between each coat.

What grit sandpaper should I be using to sand between the coats?

Thanks for the quick response, would that be 240 between both coats 1 and 2 or should I use something finer before the final coat?

Also is using a sanding sponge of the same grit ok as opposed to sand paper as I think they'll take to the shape better?

I would use 600 and a sticky dust wipe.
But all of my oak - handrail and doors I used the same hardwax oil as the floor - one coat then sand then 1 coat of floor reviver then buff.
This but you can not get the Carls anymore
