Vauxhall Combo 1.3

I have a Combo and am experiencing intermittent engine jerks when going uphill. It feels like there is no more diesel in the tank when it happens. I'll have to clutch in for about 3 seconds, letting the van roll, before the engine recovers. When this happens the cabin also fills up will a strange smell.

Scouring through the internet, it seems lots of Vauxhall models have this problem with the lambda sensor. Would this be the main suspected cause for this problem?
