It's my girlfriends car and I was using it everyday for a couple of months and it started everytime almost 1st time. The other morning my girlfriend went to use it and it wouldn't fire.

It turns over ok, and I charged the battery for good measure after repeatedly trying to start it.

What should be my sequence of fault finding? Check distributor cap, HT leads and plugs? Or shall just go out and buy new parts and replace? It's about N reg, and high ish mileage, but has been serviced pretty regularly and has been reliable up until now.

If you take a plug out, connect the eht lead to it and the other side to earth (engine block) do you get a spark when cranking the engine? (don't hold the plug with your hand!!!)

haven't tried that yet - do I just rest the plug on top of the engine and turn over the engine?

presumeably i check all plugs?

If I get spark, what next?

I have used a large croc clip (like the ones you get on jump leads) in the past to clamp the plug to a metal surface on the car body / engine block etc.
You can do all of them if you like. See if you get a spark or not first!!
