Because of solid floors, all our ground floor radiators are fed from pipes that drop down the walls from the cieling.
I want to replace a radiator with a vertical 1800mm fin radiator. Can anyone tell me if the feed and exit valves can be fitted to the top of the radiator or if they woould be better fitted to the bottom of the radiator.

The flow is always best connection at the bottom. The return can be anywhere you like.

There are radiators that provide for a top flow connection by incorporating a tube to direct the flow to the bottom, internally.
