I have a external stone door surround which I am redecorating and have discovered a rotten timber which appears to be supporting stone blocks which create the corbels, front projection and canopy, I am trying to determine if this timber is actually utilised by the build or if it is now redundant and I do not need to worry.
There appears to be several stone blocks resting on the rotten timber beam/lintel but cannot determine for definite.
Has anyone seen such a build and aware of how it is constructed and if the timber beam is relevant to the build or just a gap filler (so to speak).
Property is 1850 build with a 1750 extension, we believe the door surround was fitted to the 1750 building when the 1850 extension was added to the 1750 original build.
we have a 13" 3 skin wall and the rotten timber appears to be resting on outer skins 1 & 2.
