Wasnt sure if i should ask here on in painting and dec.

Im restoring a victorian staircase, ive managed to strip all the flaking varnish and varnish back to just wood. Im just wondering what colour varnish i should use to get the traditional victorian look?

Any help would be appreciated

What type of wood is it? you are often better off staining it and then varnishing it with clear varnish.

A generous coat of clear paste wax after you have varnished it gives it a more authentic look than just varnish.
