I will be installing vinyl flooring in my bathroom. The chipboard flooring will be new and hopefully shouldn’t have any gaps. Should I still install some plywood on top of the chipboard before covering it with Vinyl?

Vinyl flooring will mould itself to any imperfections. Boarding is done to cover and smooth any such imperfections.

....so IF and only IF your new floor is nice and smooth then no you do not need to board
