I have an old painted wheel off a cart. I want to preserve the paint on it so think I should varnish it. I am told that a water based varnish would be best.

So I need an exterior water based clear varnish ?

Is that the best way of preserving it or have I got it wrong ? Also what is the best varnish or would any old water based exterior varnish be OK ?

Thanks for any advice

If it's exterior I'd personally go for something like an old style, reliable yacht varnish, not a water based varnish.

It will be under cover but kept outside so I think I will get the yacht varnish as you say. Thanks
