I need to varnish some stripped pine doors. I have a lot of surplus water based varnish, which is satin finish. The existing doors in the house have been varnished with a matt finish polyurethane varnish. Can I use the surplus water based varnish for the first coats, then finish with the last coat of the matt polyurethane varnish to match the other doors, or will this end in a total mess?
Any advice given will be much appreciated

If you want them to end up the same colour. Use the polyurethane first. They tend to give a slightly more golden colour. Waterbased finishes over bare timber tend to not change the colour.

You then have the issue of needing to key the oil based varnish to help the waterbased to adhere.

As a decorator, my advice is to buy more of the polyurethane and use the water based for something else.
