hi there.

is it posible to wallpaper directly onto plasterboard or does it need to be skimmed first?
if i can paper direct what do i use to hide the joints of the plasterboard so that they don't show through the wallpaper.

You can paper directly onto plasterboard after some preparation. It doesn't need to be skimmed, but with skimming, you will get a surface that can be painted,so no need for paper. If you don't want to skim, you will have to at least, tape and fill the joints in the boards and cover the screw-heads with filler/finish,and sand down. You would then prime/seal the walls, and then paper. Skimming--- is all over and done with in one go,takes a bit longer to dry out.If done well, you shouldn't see the joins at all.---Tape and fill---Some done one day, some the next, sanded down day after, or when dried out.You might still see where the joins are.You can also just paint a taped wall,it's just a different finish, but always prime/mist-coat new walls/ceilings.

A mist coat is an initial primer coat of thinned down (in this case) emulsion, which you would apply to a newly plastered surface, following the manufacturers instructions,so read what it says on the tin.Never over-thin!!! Most would advise Matt emulsion to mist coat with. There are also "New-Plaster"sealers etc that you can buy.
