Hi,

My washer drain pipe keeps overflowing. I tried snaking it but a clog does not seem to be the problem. I think it may be the setup. If you look at the picture originally the standpipe was 9 inches (which was only slightly longer than the pipe leaving the trap) I thought this maybe be the problem so I extended the stand pipe by 24 inches, but this has not helped at all. Seems as if the water is getting stuck at the trap not sure though. Any suggestions?

You probably could do with a permanent connection between the hose and the standpipe, to prevent overflow. Something like this may be suitable.

Also have a read of the Q&A here regarding the requirements of standpipes, and read the instructions to ensure your washer's pump is designed to discharge as high as you have placed it.

It could also just be a blocked trap. Have you taken it apart to check that it's clear?

The trap is too deep, water will still flow but be slow. Try converting to a shallower trap.

thanks for the suggestions. I am going to check the trap when I get home from work to see if its possibly blocked. I don't think that is the case. I think converting the trap to a more shallow one should help. If these PVC pipes are glued together is there any way to take them apart without cutting them?

You need to cut it! As above the trap is too deep. Cut it at horizontal section and remake with shallow trap. At least you can inspect horizontal section when you cut out trap. Easy job even for DIYer.

So you are saying cut the straight pipe that connects the trap to the drain pipe correct?
