We are looking for a way to quiet our drain. It sits in a closet in the hallway and it echos really bad when the washing machine drains. We have rapped the pipe and that did not help. Any suggestions?

Without the benefit of any more info or better still a pic; all I can suggest is to box the pipe in and use some insulation inside the boxing to help quell the noise.
OR
If the pipe connects into a fitting above the trap then replumbing the pipe to a place after the trap might be the answer. Using a trap and standpipe or washing machine waste tee preferably with a non return device to avoid smells getting back up from the drain and into your washing machine

make sure the waste water is CLOSED to the air in the room, then add an air-admitting anti vacuum valve. That'll make a small noise occasionally.
