My Hoover HNWL 7146 washing machine partially fills with water, but then starts spinning as if starting a spin cycle, only it spins for a few seconds in one direction, then the other for a few times in each direction. It then stops and an error light starts to flash. I can shift the dial to drain and remove the water and get my clothes out and the water drains fine. Any ideas as to what the problem might be.

it would seem you have a problem with the "tacho" on the motor this is what sends the motors speed to the pcb check first that it hasnt become loose from the motor
I would also check the pipe going to the pressure (water level) switch. My beko has simialr behaviour & found that it had rubbed a hole in the pipe.
