Washing Machine hose

A couple I know have bought a new washing machine.

Problem 1) He's got the standard (21mm?) drain pipe coming out of the back of the machine, but a smaller diameter pipe coming from his sink trap.
Problem 2) He's cut off the end of the pipe from the washing machine.

Is there some kind of adaptor that could help him? His local PlumCentre apparently told him to buy a new pipe and fit it to his washing machine, but he's reluctant to tamper any further with his wife's new toy.

Is the new pipe his only soution?
