Washing machine is skipping program

hiya there,

my washing machine fills the water and then the "Analog programme dial" simply skips and the machine drains the water.

My washing machine though is the phillips whirlpool 1000rpm (inspiration) - fairly old, but running solid otherwise.

Also after a couple of tries the machine starts working again, so i'm wondering if the problem is mechanical or electrical?

Could someone pls help???
