We moved into our house 9 months ago and brought with us our old washing machine. We found the washing would smell musty when we got it out of the tumble dryer and also the machine was noisy and we were told the drum was broken (which it likely was as it wasn't packed properly when we moved). So about 3 months ago we bought a brand new washing machine. Trouble is, at least some of the time, the washing still comes out musty-smelling - I can't honestly see what could be going wrong, any ideas what would cause this?

TIA,
T

You may have resident soap sludge in the machine which harbours bacterial growth.

Give it a HOT HOT HOT cycle with NO powder, NO fabsoft, and a cup of washing soda crystals. You can put some white cotton towels in if you have them.

Does the water go grey and foam up? That's the old soap sludge dissolving. Use less in future. And do a hot cotton wash at least once a week. Add soda crystals and you can halve the powder and fabsoft.

Also, you may gave an incorrectly routed waste hose allowing dirty water to run into the machine. Please post pics of the hose and its route to the drain connection, and the position of the kitchen sink.
