Its the queen wasp all the workers die off during the autumn,they are out looking for some where to nest so keep a eye on the blighters.

so why are there so many of them already buzzing around my garden?
a couple of years ago, i was getting my young son (aged 4/5) dressed, and i put his sock on and he yelped.... i quickly took his sock off and turned it inside out to find a wasp... since then i i have hated them with a vengeance

Ohhhhhh yes, wasps, my pet hate.
Ill only kill two insects, wasps (because there evil little *******s) and Ants.
Ive had three encounters with wasps.
1. was standing at end of garden in rough ground, thought "my ankle hurts" there were three of the little sods stinging my ankles for fun. Realised there was a underground nest. Blitzed that with this white powder stuff.
2. couple of years later, same house, realised they had made a nest in a big pile of hedge trimmings. Lucky it was all nice and tinder dry so i waited till dusk then a couple of cups of paraffin and a burning rag sorted them out.
3. New house. Another underground nest. This time i dug them out. It was a case of stuck a fork in the ground turn a sod over , then RLF into this house pursued by annoyed wasps, and wait 20 mins for them to calm down again. The cunning sods had made the entrance nearly 5 feet away from the nest, so i has to turn my way along until i hit the nest, then all hell broke loose. Another wait, then i nipped out, poured a pint of petrol on it, chuck a match in, that sorted them as well.
Have you seen the Asian Hornets that working there way here, they have got to France. Two inches long and a three inch wingspan, they kill bees nests by waiting outside, catching bees and cutting there heads off, one hornet can kill 40 bees a minute. So about 20 sit outside and between them they can wipe out a nest of 30,000 bees in a few hours. Then they go inside the nest and ransack it.
The sting is extremely painful, and like having a red hot nail hammered into you. These things are definitely KLOS.

Start smoking!!! Dunno if it deters them but I convince myself that it does.
My gran keeps telling me that everything on this earth has a purpose but I'd like to know what purpose wasps and flies have (and woodlice while we're on the subject).
Bees make honey - I'd not kill a bee but wasps are fair game. One flew up my trouser leg last year and stung me twice on the knee - by good luck I was in the house cos my trousers were off and thrown across the room in a fairly speedy fashion - that was the first time in my life I'd ever been stung.
Do these citronella candles not keep 'em away?
My younger dog got stung by one two years ago and took a major allergic reaction - vet says we've got to watch because if he gets stung again he could go into anaphylactic shock - that was a major scare.
Bloody wasps.....................
