I changed my reg plate bulbs today and inside the door I had a load of rusty water.

For years when I open this door I have gotten a water swilling noise and I thought it was a store of water for the van (screen wash, etc). So didn't think anything about it.

But it is water that has tracked in some how. I\ve removed it using a simple cloth and wringing it out.

Any idea how water gets into this space ?

If you look on the forums or facebook groups for your make/model of van it will probably be a common and known cause/fix.

Mk7 Golfs leak into the spare wheel well, via the rear air-vents, light clusters and/or bootlid drain pipe. Then when the wheel well gets an inch or so of water it starts sloshing up out of the wheel well under braking and soaks the rear seats and carpets. The joy of cars!
