Over the last few days I have intermittently had a lack of heating on the timer, I can get the heating on by pressing reset but not by changing the mode from timer to always on.
I'm wondering if the room thermostat has given up the ghost, a BG RS2 of indeterminate age maybe the boiler isn't being told to come on.
Hot water is fine in eco mode and comes on as expected.

I will check the connections behind the thermostat and the boilers junction box just to be sure nothing has come astray. With the thermostat, is there a way of testing functionality with a multi meter? this is how mine is wired

All you would be checking for on the room thermostat is the switched live for voltage. Sounds like it could be the timer at fault or a motorised valve if you have one?

When testing something which is so intermittent, rather than testing with a meter, it is often better to connect a small wattage lamp to the circuit, then you get an obvious indication when the circuit is on.

Just a lamp holder, bit of flex, and a 15w lamp or similar. You connect, and leave it connected.
