Weeping gland on stop tap

My stop tap is weeping from the gland. It looks quite old, possibly 1960/70s. I tried to undo the nut to repack it but couldn't as it doesn't seem to be a traditional nut and couldn't get a spanner or grips to grip it enough untighten it.

What is the best way of doing this?

Would it be easier just to replace the whole body of the stop tap (the screw in bit that includes the spindle and gland nut) and if so, is the screw in bit a standard size?

Looks like it’s been done before anyway. Writing states it’s a Pegler, so you might be able to obtain one and swap the middle, failing that install a brand new one.

At that age stop tap would be made to bs1010
Pegler still make them to that standard, new head would fit strait in.
This may not be the case for much longer the Pegler factory in Doncaster is due to close.
