what colour for interior brickwork in old chimney?

I'm deliberating what to do with this brickwork, I've just re-pointed it as it was in a bad state, having not being touched since built. (victorian) But feels too worn to leave as 'exposed. So what colour to paint, given the surrounding wall is a deep red.

I would leave it as it is.

If that's not an option, maybe a matt black, to look like soot?
 
What's that weird pink area? Or is that just a weird photo cock up? Is anything going in there or do you plan to leave it open like that?
