The lockshields on my rads are the old type where you need a square key to open or close them.

Is there some kind of key that I need to buy? Alternatively, can I use a spanner to remove the shroud that covers the square valve head, then turn it with a spanner, or will this cause the valve to leak?

might be wrong but doesnt the cowl unscrew leaving you with the spindle that you can turn with a spanner

you are not wrong, the screwed covers are to stop anyone tampering with them, unscrew the chrome cap then turn the square head with a spanner
