I stuck a few magnets on my nearest to the boiler' radiator' and flushed it once a year, that rad, would it suffice  to collect most rust?

I may have the wrong rad in mind?

Once you put a magnet onto a steel rad virtually all the lines of magnetic force will pass along the steel and not penetrate the rad.

You need to set up a magnet on a copper pipe and ideally on a dead leg.

but wouldn't it still trap the sludge?

Try sticking a magnet on one side of a steel sheet and see how little field you can feel on the other side.

I understand what your saying tony, but that radiator, of all the house would be magnified, no? even slightly? enough to attract those fine particles floating about?.
