Whats the difference between a paint for metal and a paint for wood ?

If the wood or metal has been painted before and I am just covering it again does it matter what paint I use?

Generally any oil based paint can be used on wood or metal. However you can buy water based paints that can be used on metal.

Robie UK, may thanks for your reply.

I am under the impression that paint has some kind of quality that enables it to tell when its on metal or wood. Its just that I have used both on either and it hasn't worked it out yet. I know that if the base has not been primed and undercoated if can work it out or if I use hammerite types but I am still mistified by glosses that are descibed as for metal. Why can't they say for previously painted sufaces and stop the confusion
