What is this flattened tube coming down from the attic?

This is an interior brick wall of a bathroom with what I think is a layer of lime plaster. The plaster is crumbling away so I'd like to remove it and put up Hardie backer but this tube is in the way. Does anyone know what this is? Could this be a tie down for the roof? I don't have a picture of where it leads to as the hanging light switch is at the same spot, just on the ceiling.

I can't believe I didn't think of that, it would have been the ideal spot for a light switch

If you are going to place a light switch there best would be to relocate it to the left so it runs in the safe zones.

Unfortunately, there's not enough distance to adhere to regs and mount a switch on the wall. I'll move it to the outside eventually but that's a job for another day.

How close to the bath is it?

The entire room is 1.8m x 1.8m, the entry point is to the right (you can just see the top of the door frame) and the tub would be to the left of the picture. The total expected distance from the edge of the tub to the door is about 1m so think I can manage the required .6m. However, I've read somewhere it needs to be 3m from the water supply. I'd prefer to have the switch inside the bathroom if I can but I'm not comfortable tackling any electrical work myself and I'm not sure hiring out is in the budget.

Right.

No, I don't know what that means.

No reason not to.

No, I don't know what that means.
Walker Electrical Contractors Ltd says it needs to be 3 meters from the water outlet, which it cannot be in a room of 1.8m x 1.8m.

That refers to sockets (not switches) but the distance is measured from the edge of a bath or shower - and has recently been reduce from 3m. to 2.5m.

No one knows why.

So as long as the switch has the right safe zone rating thing, I'm ok to put it inside the bathroom at least .6m from the edge of the shower bath?

Pull switches with the little plastic insulator block are permissable within that distance.

Yes.

However, I don't think you will find a switch which does state it is suitable for the area; they just don't.

So - decide for yourself. You might have to replace it after several years.

The distance for a socket is measured from the footprint of a fixed bath or shower. Not a "water outlet"

Water outlet relates to a wet room with no shower tray

Light switches are also measured from the footprint of a fixed bath or shower.

Pull cord switches are usually permitted because they are on the ceiling and high enough (see diagram). Lights and extractor fans may also be high enough.

Basins, bidets, WCs etc are not relevant, because they are not fixed baths or showers

Diagram below shows the old 3m socket distance.
