Hi

I am.in the middlemod replacing my uPVC door and had to remove the glass from the side window to remove the fixings between the door and side window. We do want to eventually replace the windows too but not just yet.

When I removed the glass I had to cut through this horrible thick black tar like stuff that I haven't seen before.

Any idea what this is and what I should use to reinstall the glass?

Cheers

This might get ve a better view, it looks like a tape of some sort. If it is a rubber seal any idea what it's called, I've googled gaskets etc but not sure if it's the right stuff.

Just to confirm, your title says the sealant was around double glazing, but your first photo only seems to show one pane.
Were there two panes removed?

Hi

Sorry if I'm not making this clear. Here is a picture of the glass I removed with the remnants of sealant and also where I've removed it from.

Yeah so I've removed the two panes which are fun xed with black tape around the edges. All of the other windows have a rubber gasket on the inside but this one was stuck to the frame with that horrible black crap

Here's another pic
I believe you'd need something like this....

But wait before ordering, there are some experts on here such as @crank39 , that will steer you in the right direction.
In the meantime, try and carefully remove as much sticky stuff as you can; a spray of WD40 or IPA and a Stanley knife scraper may help.

Cheers, I might just run out and get some sticky.back draft excluder stuff just so I can get this window back in before it gets dark and wait for advice

Don't know exactly what its called but it'll be old thats for sure, most likely be something like butyl tape/strip, being externally glazed it was there to stop burglars removing the glass after they removed the beads just like you did, the modern stuff now is glazing tape as @RandomGrinch has linked to, theres various thicknesses ranging from 1mm right upto 6mm so perhaps take a rough measurement before buying a roll although its not expensive

Thank you for all of your advice, I'll get some of that stuff ordered. I did find one site that sells it with a diagram showing where it's applied and it looked just like what I have.

What horrible stuff it is, it took a out 35 mins to cut through and it's left marks everywhere and all under my nails. It's like tar!
