I need to paint my garden fence and I not concerned about using a coloured paint or stain so what would be the cheapest preservative to use, some sort of oil based product I presume?

Any guidance would help :)

the cheaper it is the more it costs to make it look any good

I don't want a 'film forming finish', so just some oil based preservative would be fine.

ALDI are doing their fence coat at £4.99 for 5 litres which is the cheapest I've seen. Sprayable too if you dare.

Do not use the Cuprinol water-based sprayable stuff.

Sure, it's easy to put on, but it was flaking after less than a year on new wood. Not cheap either - about £14 for four litres.

Anything water based will not last really as it sits on the surface of the wood rather than soaking into the wood. Most fence paints are water based because of the environment. Creosote is now illegal to use on fences. Some of the oil based preservatives are quite good, but expensive.
