What mortar should be used to re point leaky chimney

It depends partly on the quality of the bricks - the mortar should always be a little weaker than the brick.
If the bricks are of reasonable quality, a 1:4 mix with a little plasticer should be ok; one-half inch is a little shallow - maybe 20mm?
