I saw in the paper that British Gas are offering a boiler service for £59

Just wondered what that should include?

We have a potterton suprima (I think!) that provides hot water for a thermal store. if that makes any difference.

Cheers

A bg (****ish gas) service doesn't involve that much tbh, your better off getting a local rgi around who knows what he's doing and does a proper job.

usually getting a hover out or some brushs to clean the combustion chamber helps.youd be surprised how many just look at the flame and say it looks alright.not always the case with band a boilers though.

BG Service policy basically includes the following:
Take sample from flue with FGA
Check burner pressure and case seal
Check controls
Try and sell a CO detector
Try and sell a Hydroflow
Recommend an upgrade, powerflush seems favourite, or maybe a new boiler sir?
Try and sell service cover.
Complete paperwork and leave
:D

Do you mean: what would that include with ****ish gas, or
What should a proper boiler service include?

at the end of the day b/g don't pretend to do a full strip down ,if you ask they will tell you whats included in service, if you want more go else where, most people on this site give it the big one but apart from not trying to sell stuff they do pretty much the same service. If you use a FGA once you've done a burner pressure/gas rate, polarity check, safety lock out check, checked inside boiler heat exchanger case seals etc, its pretty much done. Yes b/g will try to offer other stuff c.o.d powerflush, trvs, etc but just say no as zammo used to say....

BG are advertising this as a stand alone service not safety check as they offer to contract customers.
In reality not a great deal you can do to a suprima that will prevent it breaking down and it will probably have a dead spider and 2 leaves in it so dont bother as baxipot say keep your money to put towards a new board

That is not a service, that is a safety check
If you had your car only mot'ed every year but not serviced, you would be pretty likely to break down somewhere and pay a pretty penny to get the car fixed.
Boilers that are properly serviced are decidedly more reliable and are expected to live a lot longer. A certain perfect brand excluded maybe.

£59 might just buy you the right amount of inhibitor you'll need for that big rust collector in the airing cupboard :D

That is not a service, that is a safety check

Apart from cleaning the H/X what else is there to do, apart from the above?

Inspect/clean flue, fan, venturi, burner, check/set max pressure, ignition pressure, minimum pressure, check/add inhibitor, clean combustion chamber, inspect/replace seals.
