a piece of molding fell off one side , it was slightly rotten where CV it had been nailed,
The paint has flaked off some other bits.
I’m not very good with heights, I prodded it with a stick and it didn’t feel rotten yet, but I couldn’t get to the top piece .
It's one of those situations with wood. i.e. you're saying it's not feeling rotten yet, however judging by the pic all the wood needs attended to otherwise it's degradation will simply be accelerated. 'If' the molding parts are simply decorative, you might get away with removing the other piece for uniformity and, if the remaining wood is sound enough, treating it accordingly. Or take the opportunity when up there of reinstating the molding even if it's only decorative to retain the feature.
If it's three floors up, that would need to be a scaffolding / access tower job for safety?
