What to do with the 'leftovers'!

DIY is all well and good, but can somebody tell me how you responsibly dispose of all those little jars of leftover white spirit/turps etc that need throwing at the end of the job? All the men I have asked seem to think it is okay to throw it down the sink/drain!!!!
Would imagine chemicals in our water system is not the brightest of ideas, so whats a DIYer to do?

Pour them onto newspaper or card board and elt them soak into it and evaporate on their own then throw it away.

Paint is the same...if you have little scraps left paint it out onto a board and then throw the board away...that way it isnt classed as hazardous waste.

I recently had about 20 varius size tins of different types od paint..odd stuff that isnt used much..probably amounted to about 40 odd litres...the council wanted 600 quid to take it away!!!!

And they wonder why people dump stuff!!!
