Hi,

I got overly excitable while doing first fix electrics and removed all the plaster from the back wall of one of the recesses next to my chimney (1.2m x 2.4m)
I was planning to re plaster the wall (Hard wall?) to match all the others, but I had a go on a smaller piece of wall and let’s just say it didn’t go as well as I’d have hoped, and now I’m not sure what to do.

My options as I see it, fix plaster board then either tape the edges or Skim.

The space isn’t very big and I think I might be able to dot and dab 1 sheet of board up, minimising the need for tape any where but at the edges, would the finish be that noticeable? Especially as I was intending to put shelves up?

Or, am I just being lazy by not skimming it? Or would it be easier to use something like smooth over instead of plaster?

Do I need to use tapered edged board? As it’s going to be slotted into a recess?

Also? I have an area of ceiling plaster 1m2 (Lath and Dust) that just looks wrong, all cracked and blown, I really don’t want to take the whole ceiling down, can I board & Skim over the top?

Cheers
Ali

If you are neat cutting the board, there is no reason why you can't just decorate it, using a painter's caulkaround the edge. If there is a bit gap, (either because the walls you are buttin up to are not straight, or you cut boards like i do), you will have to fill it with joint filler or similar, bed a scrim onto it and then joint over that. OR skim it. It's down to you , really.

Just make sure the wall is prepped well.

As for the ceiling, board it with long enough screws ( 50 - 75mm) to make it secure, and finish it how you like. Taking that lathing plaster down isn't work the hassle IMHO.
