What to use on new stairs?

Hi

I have installed a new stair case, its in oak and i have been given conflicting advice on what's best to use when finish it.

Do I use am oil based sealer, or a varnish?

Any ideas advise would be much appreciated....

I would go for a shellac based sanding sealer first..then a couple of coats of oil based eggshell finish...eggshell IMO gives a nice polished/waxed effect and isnt too shiny

What's the point in using oak if you are going to paint it?

I've done loads of this and the best finish I've achieved, is using Sikkens Cetol TS interior...the colourless finish.....tis beautiful on good wood.
Well worth the cash.

Sikkens is a far better product than Sadolin thats for sure..

I don't want to paint it but want to keep a natural look, as you said "whats the point in painting it" when its a nice oak construction......
