Evening everyone,

Can someone explain what an R1R2 test is? (Hope that's the right term :? )

I've heard electricians talking about them now and again, but never understood what they do or how they'd do one.

Cheers,
Nick.

It proves live neutral polarity and continuity of earth

You short out live and earth one end (with the other end disconnected) then at the other end you measure the resistance between live and earth with your low ohms meter

This gives R1+R2 where R1 is resistance of live conductor, and R2 is resistance of CPC (resistance of neutral would be Rn)

The Z's at the end of the circuit will be in theory equal to Ze (external loop) + R1+R2 , but in practice its better to measure Z's (and of course this shouldn't be done until you have proved continuity of earth.. the tests have a set order they should be done in)

R1 is the resistance of the 'Live' conductor.
R2 is the resisance of the c.p.c 'earth' conductor.
r1 is an 'end-to-end' resistance of the phase conductor in a ring main.
rn is the end to end resistance of the neutral in the ring main.
r2 is the earth .

But my favourite is R1. It's a Yamaha YZF R1.

I hope this helps.
