Cheapest and very effective way if you have brown carpets, is to drain system and then remove each rad, take it outside and hose it out.
Then find out how fresh water has been getting into the system, rectify it, and put all the rads back.
Getting the sludge out of the boiler is virtually impossible without a powerflush machine.
Adding things (eg: chemicals) to the water will not make any discernable improvement if the system is as bad as you intimate, to agree with Dave above.
hi thanks fot the help....... if removal of rads is done and puting a jet washer in one end and flushing through will this clean out the best ? or is chemical cleaning the best ?.
thanks colin
