What's the name of the rod that regulates car boot opening?

What's the name of the rod thing that takes the weight of of your car boot (trunk) and causes it to open smoothly?

Mine has broken, but I don't know what to Google for a replacement.

Its like a black metal tube with a thiner silver rod that can be pushed in or pulled out under air pressure or something I think.
