What's this air brick for?

Hey folks,
I live in a c. 1903 mid terrace and was wondering what this air brick actually vents to? It's obviously above ground level and I've a solid floor anyway; is there a cavity in my stone wall? Every house here has one.

Ah that could be it! There's no fireplace anymore but I do have another vent within the living room where fireplace may well have been. Thanks!

Just an idea, but you may originally have had wooden floors which is what the air vent would (in this scenario) have been for. The solid floor may have been put in place afterwards with the air brick being left in place.
