so i got chimney normal in house but i want to know the physic

so my house has alleyway and its terraced house and i believe the upstairs chimney is supported on the arch brickwork on alleyways could this be true has anyone hear about this before thank you?

Best provide some pics inside and out...

Do you mean there are two arches at second floor level?

Do the arches align with the two chimney breasts in the house?

Get a tape measure and measure the distance between the downstairs opposite wall to the chimney then go upstairs and do the same, you'll then know where the chimney is resting on.

I haven't seen this before, maybe someone has...

thank you yes the upstairs chimney is suppprted by the arches of the alley is this safe! and what is the construct of it? invor

Is this what you mean?

If so, it is very risky taking out the ground floor chimney breast because the arch pushes in from next door and you end up with a big mess in both houses.
It can be done but requires some hefty steelwork bracing on your side of the wall and will work out expensive.
Probably not worth the cost (or risk!) for a few extra square feet.

Imagine a person, stood with legs apart, the person crotch is the middle of the arch. Now have that person take one leg off the ground, to maintain balance, then would have to transfer their weight, over the one leg remaining in contact with the ground, or fall over. The chimney cannot transfer its weight, so it would collapse, unless you replace the missing support.

Never mind people standing with legs apart and imagining what the heck this thread might be about...

richardmm, please include some photos and explain what you're thinking of removing so that people can understand what you're talking about!
