A really good digging spade is the long straight handle with pointed tip. The army uses this type although with a much shorter handle.
B&Q sell them with a green rubber top and they are good value with guarantee. I've bought three of them now, not that any have worn out but for my friends as I care about them so much.
I would personally bury the standard type of UK spade and shovel into a big hole and use just this one. The long handle is excellent for tall people with bad backs!
