Having to replace some of my 3" sq x 4' wooden posts.

This time I want to use a Metpost, most likely a cemented version once the old stump is removed.

They take the brunt of the Westerly, as always they rot at the base in the soil

So which would be best, the grip or bolt type.

thanks

I prefer the bolted ones. I find it easier to get the post vertical. Paint them well before fitting, to delay rust. I fitted stainless steel bolts and nuts to mine. Set the height so that soil will not accumulate in the socket or around the timber.

Also consider fitting concrete spurs. You can bolt wooden posts to them, out of contact with the ground, and the spurs will last longer than you do. I use dark chocolate masonry paint on mine to blend in with the dark wood fence stain.

I find the grip ones less obtrusive. Easy enough to get the posts vertical. As jd says, worth an extra coat of paint though.
