Which paint to use

I want to pain over a shiny surface that is the inset and hearth on my gas fire surround. Need advice on what type of paint I need to use and how best to apply it.

is it tile, concrete, or plastic laminate?

Don’t know what it’s made of it’s an inset of thin wood I think then surface is shiny front

Painting around a fireplace is generally a bad idea. Have you considered some nice tiles?
