Whining Diff Merc 500sel

My merc has what i'm told is called a 'whiny diff'

It is pretty bad.

Can this be cured, or does it have to be replace?

Does anyone have any ideas on cost?

I really need to sell the car as I need something more economical as baby on way and belt needs tightening!
