Our whirlpool dishwasher's stopped doing anything apart from the light flashing 8 times.We got it second hand (though not used much) but didn't put any salt in for ages as we didn't know we had to. Is this what's caused the problem and, if so, is there anything we can try ourselves before having to call anyone in???

Thanx- just tipped the machine and got a load of water out and it seems to be working again now . Filter had been thoroughly cleaned though... Is this something that'll just happen now and then?

Nope. Not normal. Flooded base is error code 2 (2 flashes).
Flooded base can be from a leak or from overfoaming (using 3,4 or 5 in 1 tablets as well as rinse aid, also certain tablets are prone to foaming).
