Whirlpool dishwasher 5540

Hi guys can someone help, unable to start dishwasher i think its the control knob but not sure. when i turn the knob to start the washing cycle sometimes the cycle lights come on sometimes not but not always the correct lights to match the settings and the washer non responsive to any settings. tried holding in the start button to reset but still nothing.
