I have recently had a few problems with our DWF 416 W Whirlpool/Ikea Dishwasher. Having searched the web for resolutions to no avail, I then chose to fiddle!! The water would not drain although the drain pipes were clear. There was power but would not drain and hence not start!!

I turned the white plastic knob on the front at the very bottom of the machine which only made a grinding noise but then when I shut the door the machine sprang into action!! Problem solved and we had already looked at a replacement so also £300 saved!

Can anyone please tell me what this knob is or does to hopefully help others in the future?

From you description it sounds like a piece of glass, crockery, or olive pip etc was jamming the pump. If you didn't remove it the chances are it will find its way back in there sooner or later.

Thanks Zipper, seems something has caused the problem again as the dishwash machine came to the end of its cycle and contsantly beeped, I then pressed the start button which flashed 4 times, any other ideas as this is sending me mad?! Not quite sure how to get to the pump either?
Cheers

If you are lucky there is a removable plastic cover in the bottom of the sump on the left hand side (it may be fastened in place by a T20 screw). Take out the filters & bail out as much water as you can before looking for it. Remove the cover (if it has one) & you should be able to fish out whatever is jamming the pump impellor.

Thanks Zipper
I removed the kickplate, lifted out the PCB and removed the power to and the pump behind, behind this there was a piece of glass as you suggested, Removed the glass put everything back together, hey presto it worked!! Really appreciate your help!
