Whirlpool dishwasher not filling

My whirlpool dishwasher sounds as if it is draining when 1st switched on but then it doesnt fill with water or begin a programme, the off button (X) flashes 4 times then goes out and then flashes 4 again, and again and again, I poured water into it and it all drained out ok so I assumed there wasnt a fault with the drainage, I read this is a fault but what sort of fault and would it be expensive to repair, the dishwasher is only 14 months old is used infrequently so to develop a fault so early is frustrating

Ok so drains fine, thats good.
Next is to check that the water inlet valve is functioning.
Might also be worth checking that there is definately water supply at the dishwasher end of the mains water inlet hose.

Is it constantly draining or does the drain cycle stop? You will hear the drain pump constantly running.
