Whirlpool fridge freezer not auto defrosting

Hi

I have a side by side Whirlpool fridge freezer that is not auto defrosting (model number 8586 150 15002).
I replaced the thermostat unit but that didn't help. I am going to test the heater element for continuity today when I get hold of a tester, but other than that I'm not sure what it could be. Can the control unit fail but the rest of the fridge work? It's about 10 years old so if this needs a new circuit board is it worth repairing or is other stuff likely to go wrong.
